Maintenance

Annual or mileage-based checks

A vehicle maintenance  & Pre-MOT checklist includes checking fluids like engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid; inspecting tyres for pressure and tread depth; and testing lights and wipers. Other important checks involve your battery, brakes, and air filters, with many items needing attention at least monthly or annually.

  • Engine oil and filter: Change regularly according to the manufacturer's schedule, typically every 7,500 to 10,000 miles or every 12 months.
  • Air filters: Inspect the engine air filter and cabin air filter every six months to a year, and replace as needed.
  • Brakes: Have a professional inspect the brake system.
  • Coolant: Check levels when the engine is cool, and have the system flushed according to the manufacturer's schedule.
  • Battery: A general guideline is to consider replacing the battery every three to five years.
  • Other components: An annual service should also include inspections of the exhaust, belts, hoses, and other safety-related features.

MOT

Hassle-free MOT

Although we don't do MOTs here at GT Vehicle Solutions, we can arrange your MOT during a Vehicle Service or Maintenance check

A pre-MOT inspection is a thorough check of your vehicle's condition to ensure it meets minimum safety and environmental standards before a formal MOT test. We perform simple checks on lights, tyres, wipers, and fluid levels. We also check to identify and fix potential problems beforehand, which can save you from failing the official test.

  • Lights: Ensure all lights are working, including headlights, brake lights, indicators, and hazard lights. Check that the number plate light is also functional.
  • Tyres: Check the tread depth is at least 1.6mm and that there are no cuts or bulges, also check the pressure.
  • Wipers and screen wash: Make sure the wiper blades are in good condition, not torn, and that they clean the screen effectively. We top up the screen wash.
  • Windscreen: Look for any chips or cracks. A chip larger than 10mm in the driver's line of sight or a crack or over 40mm long will likely cause a fail.
  • Brakes: Test that the brakes feel firm and that the car doesn't pull to one side when braking. Ensure the handbrake is strong enough to hold the vehicle.
  • Fluids: Check that engine oil, brake fluid, and coolant levels are between the minimum and maximum marks.

Other checks:

  • Horn: Make sure it works.
  • Mirrors: Ensure they are intact, securely fitted, and free from cracks
  • Bodywork: Check for any sharp edges or significant corrosion.
  • Doors: Make sure they open and close properly from both the inside and outside.
  • Seatbelts: Test that they are in good condition and work correctly.
  • Exhaust: Listen for any unusual noises or rattling coming from the exhaust.
  • Number plates: Make sure they are clean, legible, and secure, and that the light above the rear number plate is working.
